Disgraced former congressman Anthony Weiner pleaded guilty to one count of transmitting obscene material to a minor.
Under a plea agreement with the US attorneys office in Manhattan he will comply with the sex offenders registry. Prosecutors agreed to a sentence between 21 to 27 months in prison under advisory guidelines, although it will be up to the judge to determine his sentence.
Weiner stood solemnly with his jaw clenched during the proceeding. He also agreed to forfeit his iPhone as part of the deal with the government.
Between tears Weiner told Judge Loretta Preska “I knew this was morally wrong and unlawful.”
“I have a sickness but I do not have an excuse,” he said
Weiner stopped several times to compose himself as he told the court that he sent sexually explicit images to a 15 year old girl. He apologised to her and other women he has “harmed.”
The hearing is still ongoing.
